If motherhood has taught me anything, it’s how important it is to live in the moment. Children don’t think about yesterday, and they don’t worry a lot tomorrow. They just live in the here and now. It’s made me realise how we, as adults, should try an follow suit.
As humans, were always striving for more. A bigger house. A better car. We convince ourselves that our life will be better if we finally get married. Or have a baby. Or maybe three?
We have said babies, then moan that they aren’t old enough and our lives will be easier once they have grown. Then they grow before your eyes, and we get upset that they’ve grown too quickly.
The truth is, there is no better time to be happy that right now. If not now, then when?
We find ourselves constantly chasing happiness because it always associated with ‘something’ or ‘someday’.
Meanwhile, life keeps moving forward.
Over the past few years I’ve realised that what we really need to appreciate is today. The here and now. The small things that we take for granted. The things that mean so much, but because we live on this frantic world which is constantly on the go, we forget the importance of.
Our health. Our family. The roof over our head. The food in our fridge.
As you’ll know from reading my blog, Ive suffered with anxiety practically my whole life. And there’s many coping strategies I try to use to help deal with it. When I’m having a really bad day and I find myself in a downward spiral focused on the negatives I ask myself: ‘I might not be happy about XYZ, but what do I have in my life to be happy about right now?’
Thinking about the things which make you happy, instantly changes how you feel. I like to focus on how I can make my children belly laugh from tickling them, or telling them a funny joke.
In that moment, it’s perfect, and it reminds of me of how to it feels to be happy. I recognise it. I grab it. I savour it.
Life will always be filled with challenges, you have to take the rough with the smooth. The good with the bad.
But there is no way to happiness.. happiness is the way! x
What is it that makes YOU happy? I’d love to hear from you!
